Vikings enthrallingly captures the world of Norsemen and oarsmen, circa in the Eastern Baltic but soon heading West to England.

History's first scripted series is a headlong tumble into an irresistible and surprisingly neglected genre. All this critic's reviews.

The New York Times. Vikings is a mini-series about a band of professional pillagers with a disregard for human life and a relentless focus on gratifying material desires.

So it is somewhat surprising that it is also a refreshing study in restraint. Mostly, though, Vikings is disappointing because so much of the component parts are good but are ill served by flabby direction and a gassy script.

Vikings tells the story of a tribe in a nonpartisan way. It is more life-like in comparison to its rival Game of Thrones but contains more censorship.

I really enjoy this show but I have a question. Who are the people who live in the Ragnar's village and why are the so unimportant?

Within it laid the intriguing "warts and all" story of the rise to power of curious, pensive Ragnar Lodbrok, anchored by a smirky, quiet Brad Pitt-style performance by actor Travis Fimmel.

Primitive Norsemen aren't a heavily explored topic on TV, so a lot of Vikings was a learning experience as much as it was a drama.

But as much interest as I found in watching the various details of a culture that was largely unknown to me, the pacing of the show was off and instead of letting Ragnar's story play out organically, we often fast-forwarded through weeks and months sometimes within a single episode so that we could reach a certain point in his history by the end.

Huge character moments were skipped over for the sake of touching on this point , that point and the other point in the legend, and it made most every character hard to get a handle on.

And so, by the end, I was barely invested in any on-screen persona aside from Ragnar himself. If the characters weren't standing around saying nothing which is what most of them did most of the time , we were only given snapshots into their lives at certain points, with the intent being that we should fill in the gaps on our own.

The worst case of this was the captured monk Athelstan, who fast became an audience-surrogate and a character one could easily root for. But we only checked in with him a few times and, at one point, an episode "Sacrifice" started out with him looking and acting completely different from when we last saw him; having almost completely assimilated to the Viking look and dress.

So, you know, at some point he just decided to do that. Most of the characters too and this is partially based on their belief system were extremely temperamental and I found myself not knowing what any of them would do at any moment, or how they'd react to anything at any time.

Ragnar might approve of something, or he might disapprove. He might think it's funny when someone dies or he might silently object.

One of the problems with basing a series on old myths and stories is that So the challenge here was to humanize these storied warriors as much as possible.

And, well, they did the best they could. The penultimate episode "Sacrifice" stands out to me since it had Ragnar, essentially, tricking an assumed friend Athelstan into a situation where he was supposed to volunteer to die.

It didn't quite work out that way of course and Ragnar just sort of shrugged it off, not caring one way or the other.

Then, another warrior, Leif, volunteered to take Athelstan's place and it was supposed to mean something. I t has been casually dismissed by some as Game of Thrones-lite, but to ignore Vikings would be a mistake.

Season one is currently airing on the History Channel in the UK, while both seasons one and two are available via Amazon Instant Video. An altogether more streamlined affair than the HBO drama — it deals mostly with one family, rather than the dozens that populate the world of GoT — the show is as good, if not better, at a lot of elements familiar to fans of George RR Martin's epic.

For those just encountering the show on History, it was on Tuesday night that we saw Vikings really swing into action with its second instalment — like GoT it really could have done with a double-length opener.

The first episode gave us a crash course in Viking village politics, a bit of religion, a feeling for Viking problems and ambitions, and introduced us to our hero Ragnar Lothbrok and his family.

It was a lot to pack in, it did so with some grace, but Tuesday allowed us to start the adventure proper.

We began with Ragnar leading a famous raid. We don't know whether the real Ragnar was involved in the AD raid regarded as the start of the Viking age; a good example of how Vikings blends European history with its fictional storytelling.

The drama plays fast and loose with recorded events, but you'll get some knowledge of the times from watching.
